SNAP Benefit Suspension Leaves Thousands in Richland and Lexington Counties Facing Food Insecurity

The ongoing government shutdown has resulted in a suspension of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. This has increased food insecurity in the United States. In South Carolina’s Richland and Lexington counties, more than 34,000 households, or over 74,000 people, did not receive their expected November 2025 benefits. These benefits totaled over $14 million in October.

The U.S. Senate has passed a resolution to end the shutdown, but it still needs approval from the House and the President. Dr. Deborah Greenhouse, a Columbia pediatrician, said she has seen more families expressing concern about how they will feed their children. She noted that many SNAP recipients are working adults with low-wage jobs.

Food banks and local businesses in the Midlands have increased support for those affected. Organizations such as Mission Lexington and Harvest Hope have expanded their services. Some restaurants are offering free or discounted meals…
