COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers are looking to strengthen the state’s Move Over Law, saying gaps in the current statute are putting first responders at risk while working on the side of the road.
The Move Over Law requires drivers approaching a law enforcement vehicle, ambulance or tow truck with flashing lights to move out of the closest lane and slow down when possible. But new bills are aiming to clarifying and strengthen the law, which has gotten an influx of attention over the last year amid a state-wide push for better enforcement after several law enforcement officers were killed or injured while roadside.
“It should be more clear just because on the interstate being heavy traffic, you have people that don’t know,” said Alexa McDonald. “You have to do everything to protect people that are trying to stay keep us safe out there.”…
