COLUMBIA, S.C. — Corey Mitchell spent years serving others as a Columbia police officer, husband, father and community leader. He says he loved people and loved being active in his city. But in 2020, his life changed suddenly when he began experiencing alarming symptoms that led to a full-body MRI.
“The doctor walked back in the room and said, ‘I know what is wrong with you,’” Mitchell said. “She told me I had multiple sclerosis. At this point, I was crying.”
Mitchell said rehab was one of the hardest chapters of his life, but it was also the moment he felt his community surround him. “While I was in rehab, it was flooding with visitors,” he said. “Everybody was coming to see me.”…
