South Carolina flu-related hospitalizations on the rise

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Georgia and South Carolina are entering the year 2026 with rising cases of influenza.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows skyrocketing cases of influenza-like illnesses during the last few weeks of 2025 in Georgia and South Carolina, classifying the states as “very high” in activity levels.

Flu season’s week 52 of 2025 (between Dec. 21 and Dec. 27) brought the number of hospitalizations in South Carolina up to 735, with the most vulnerable population being seniors and adults over 50 years old, according to weekly surveillance reports from the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH).
