LEXINGTON, S.C. — Drivers along Augusta Road in West Columbia/Lexington are seeing ongoing construction as part of a South Carolina Department of Transportation safety improvement project aimed at reducing crashes and improving pedestrian access.
Augusta Road, also known as U.S. Highway 1, is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in the area, carrying tens of thousands of drivers each year. According to SCDOT, it has also been one of the most dangerous. The agency reports the corridor experienced between 250 and 300 crashes annually, with roughly 25 percent resulting in injuries.
