S.C. House bill aims to phase out state income tax

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) — A proposal moving through the South Carolina Senate would overhaul how the state collects income tax, eventually phasing it out entirely over the next several years.

The bill, which passed the House last year, cleared its first hurdle in a Senate subcommittee this week. Lawmakers say the goal is simple: put more money back into South Carolinians’ pockets.

“We’re interested in putting money back in taxpayers’ pockets,” Sen. Ross Turner, R‑Greenville, said.

What the bill would change

Under the proposal, the state would move to a two‑tier income tax system:

  • 1.99% for people earning less than $30,000.
  • 5.39% for people earning more than $30,000.
