COLUMBIA, S.C. — A potentially dangerous winter storm is edging closer to South Carolina, and while forecast confidence is improving, how much ice the state could see remains the biggest concern.
Most of the Midlands is now under a winter storm watch, and News19’s weather team say freezing rain, not snow, poses the greatest threat as the storm unfolds late Saturday through Sunday.
Improving agreement, but not a single answer
According to News19 Chief Meteorologist Chevy Chevalier, weather models Thursday night were showing better agreement than earlier in the week, particularly when it comes to potential ice accumulation.
Both major forecast models now suggest ice amounts ranging from around one-tenth of an inch up to one-half inch in parts of central Midlands of South Carolina, including Columbia and Lexington.
