Most powerful earthquake of the year in South Carolina hits overnight

For the second time in less than a week an earthquake was confirmed in South Carolina. And the most recent tremors produced the most powerful seismic activity recorded in the Palmetto State in nearly six months, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Geological Survey data shows.

Late Saturday night, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake occurred near Centerville, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Only a 3.0 magnitude earthquake on Aug. 23, 2025 in the Coronaca area was more powerful than Saturday’s tremors, USGS data shows.
