‘It’s scary’: Five earthquakes near Lake Murray raise dam concerns

IRMO, SC (WACH) — A recent cluster of earthquakes around Lake Murray has some Midlands residents on edge, raising questions about how much the Lake Murray Dam can withstand even as experts and the dam’s operator say there is no cause for alarm.

Five earthquakes have hit the Lake Murray area in the last 30 days, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Fabian Fuentes, who lives near the lake, said the tremors feel unusual for the area and caught him off guard.

“It’s pretty scary because I’m 57 and up until about week, two weeks ago, I had never been through an earthquake,” Fuentes said…
