This Week in History: Tornado Outbreak of March 15, 2008

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – A tornado outbreak occurred across the state of South Carolina the afternoon of March 15 of 2008. Many of the tornadoes confirmed were considered strong (EF2/EF3).

The event changed the lives of many and caused an estimated 40 million dollars in damage. 85 homes/mobile homes destroyed and around 400 homes had damage to them from the tornadoes.

One of the strongest tornadoes that affected the area first touched down in Newberry County near Silverstreet. It then continued east to Prosperity in Richland County where it diminished. Many homes in significantly damaged along with downed trees and powerlines. This tornado was given an EF-3 rating, meaning maximum winds were up to 136-165 MPH. It was on the ground for about 23 miles and at one point was 1320 yards/.75 miles wide…
