S.C. electric co-ops adopt new data center rate to protect customers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – South Carolina’s electric cooperatives have approved a new rate for data centers and other major power users, a policy leaders say is meant to protect everyday customers.

The board of Central Electric Power Cooperative, the Columbia-based group that supplies wholesale power to 19 local electric cooperatives, voted unanimously Wednesday to formalize contract and payment requirements it has used on a case-by-case basis.

The rate applies to new and expanding customers that need 20 megawatts of electricity or more — a level of demand typical of data centers and some large industrial operations…
