Family of man who died at Richland County jail reaches $3.8 million settlement with county

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The family of Lason Butler, a man who was found dead in a cell at the Richland County jail, has reached a settlement with the county over his death.

Documents show a judge accepted the settlement arrangement Monday inside the federal court in Charleston. Under the terms, Butler’s mother and father will receive a gross settlement of $3.8 million. About 40 percent of that settlement will have to go to attorney fees, however.

Butler’s mother, Lakeisha Butler, filed the lawsuit months after the February 2022 death of her son at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, the jail facility in Richland County. He was found dead in his cell by staff at the facility…
