‘People, Not Patients’ highlights voices of those who lived at former South Carolina State Hospital

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A project highlighting the voices of people who lived at the South Carolina State Hospital is now bringing their stories to the forefront.

“People, Not Patients,” created by Able South Carolina in partnership with Historic Columbia and funded by SC Humanities, focuses on the lived experiences of people with disabilities who were once treated at the facility, also known as Bull Street. The hospital first opened in the 1800s and operated for more than a century.
