Richland County to pay nearly $4 million in settlement over inmate death at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Richland County has agreed to pay $3.8 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit involving a 27-year-old man who died in 2022 after spending less than two weeks inside the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Lason Butler died following a traffic-related arrest. The lawsuit alleges Butler was in the middle of a mental health crisis and was housed in unsanitary conditions without running water and proper care. He was later found dead. An autopsy ruled his death as dehydration.
