In the middle of a tense NCAA Tournament Final Four battle between UConn and South Carolina, Huskies coach Geno Auriemma went live on ESPN after feeling his squad wasn’t getting its fair share of foul calls from referees.
The Huskies lost 62-48 after shooting 19-for-61 from the field (31 percent overall) and 6-for-21 from three (29 percent). Auriemma was angry following a sequence in which Sarah Strong’s jersey was ripped straight down the middle during play.
Auriemma believed that it should have triggered a whistle immediately. Instead, there was no call or stoppage in play. Thatβs when Auriemma used his interview with ESPNβs Holly Rowe to vent about the lopsided whistle that saw the Gamecocks shoot 14 free throws compared to the Huskies’ four through three quarters.
