Columbia in talks to purchase Strom Thurmond building for downtown housing

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The city of Columbia is in talks to purchase the long-underused Strom Thurmond Building and Courthouse as part of efforts to bring new housing to downtown.

The building on Assembly Street served as a federal hub more than 20 years ago but has been underutilized since 2003. The General Services Administration put the building up for sale at the beginning of April as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate the federal real estate portfolio and cut government waste.

According to GSA Administrator Edward Forst, the sale would save taxpayers approximately $56.3 million in delinquent maintenance and another $3.1 million in annual maintenance costs…
