Heavy hitters join the environmental fight in lower South Carolina

Three major, highly contested projects are poised to potentially impact the South Carolina Lowcountry — a proposed data center, a natural gas power plant, and a related underground gas pipeline — and now the local opposition is drawing support from some heavy hitters in the environmentalist world.

The Sierra Club of South Carolina and Savannah Riverkeeper have now joined the fight against a trio of energy and data projects that have sights on the rural Lowcountry.

In late 2025, major energy companies announced plans for a proposed natural gas power plant in the Canadys area of Colleton County, to be fueled by a 70-plus mile underground gas pipeline through Hampton and Colleton counties…
