Juvenile tied to ‘cybercriminal’ group accused of faking USC active shooter calls

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — Federal prosecutors in Pennsylvania have charged a juvenile accused of carrying out a series of swatting hoaxes last summer, including one targeting the University of South Carolina, according to university officials.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the suspect is a self-identified member of a cybercriminal group known as “Purgatory” and is believed to have selected schools at random.
