Columbus is feeling good paying homage to the ‘Godfather of Soul’

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The city of Columbus was feeling good this Sunday afternoon with the help of a James Brown tribute held at the Springer Opera House.

According to Sterling Baker-McClary, who portrayed James Brown, the musical tribute entitled ‘I Feel Good: An Homage to James Brown’ is to honor the life and legacy of the renowned soul and funk singer recognized as the “Godfather of Soul.”

Baker-McClary wrote, directed, choreographed and organized the entire production. He says he wanted to pay homage to the ‘hardest-working man in showbusiness’ to celebrate the imprint he left on music for generations to come.

As part of the Springer’s annual Juneteenth celebration, community members gathered to enjoy some of his biggest hits. From “Please Please Please” to “Papa Don’t Take No Mess” to his iconic “I Feel Good,” the audience was in for quite the show.

“To be able to perform and to be able to curate a good time for hundreds of people, and to really see people genuinely having a good time, laughing, smiling and clapping. They even got up and started dancing today and when you get that type of genuine and authentic reaction, it feels good to just be a vessel for the arts,” Baker-McClary said.
