COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – We will soon mark a quarter century since the Sept. 11 attacks that claimed nearly 3,000 lives. Days after, Fort Benning played a major role in the long War in Afghanistan.
Twenty-five years after the attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001, which led to decades of war, people across the Chattahoochee Valley and nation will climb stairs equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. They’ll be completing first responders’ heroic journey to save others, honoring the 343 New York firefighters who died that day, many with military ties. Those symbolic fitness challenges will happen in different cities across Georgia.
The Second Annual Columbus 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be Saturday morning, Sept. 12, at Synovus Park where the Clingstones play. It is 2,200 steps in remembrance of the sacrifices made a quarter century ago. The start time is 8:46 a.m. Each participant gets a challenge coin, T-shirt and swag bag.
