A Columbus couple, Harley and Elizabeth Hoad, meticulously restored and preserved the history of a former schoolhouse that played a key role in educating generations of children while giving it a fresh design.
The now-transformed Bibb City Schoolhouse was unveiled Wednesday afternoon at a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house hosted by the Greater Columbus Home Builders Association in partnership with the Bibb City Holding Company and the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
“It really is remarkable,” Robin Wallace, executive officer of the Greater Columbus Home Builders Association told the gathering. “The project is a wonderful example of what can happen when historic preservation and talents of the local building industry come together.”
The schoolhouse was built in 1915 by the Bibb City Manufacturing Company to educate the children of mill workers in the company-owned mill village, according to the press release.
“This schoolhouse stood here in the heart of Bibb City for more than a century,” Wallace said. “It was almost demolished more than 25 years ago, and now, because of the vision of Harley and Elizabeth Hoad of Bibb City Holding Company, the property has undergone an extensive renovation. This building has been given new purpose for generations to come.”…
