COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – This Friday will mark 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks that forever changed America and those who serve our nation, propelling them into decades of war. We sat down with two retired Army generals, former top leaders at Fort Benning, to talk in depth about that tragic day and its impact on soldiers.
I started with the question a lot of us are asked: Where were you on Sept. 11, 2001, and what did you personally experience on that tragic day?
Former Fort Benning commanding general Maj. Gen. (ret.) Patrick Donahoe said, “It was a late afternoon event for me because I was in Kuwait with the Intrinsic Action Task Force, which was a 1,000-man Army task force that was in Kuwait, five miles off the Iraqi border. The Battalion XO told me a second plane just hit the World Trade Center. And I can remember looking at him and going, that’s just a bad report. It’s a mistake. And so I turned around and I was walking across the sand towards our Tactical Operations Center when he shot back out of the tent and he goes, plane just hit the Pentagon. And that’s when I think for all of us that were in earshot of that, we knew that we were under attack.”…
