FORT MITCHELL, Ala. — Volunteers gathered at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery Saturday to clean gravestones in remembrance of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Volunteers and family members across the country are honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, including at Fort Mitchell. The National Cemetery Administration and Carry the Load organization held a national day of service at Fort Mitchell and other national cemeteries. This is the eighth year for the event.
“They are helping us clean the headstones as part of their service,” Fort Mitchell National Cemetery Director Greg Smith said. “They sign up online. They showed out. It’s raining today and there out here cleaning the headstones. So were out here spraying solution on the headstones and then they are coming back and scrubbing the headstones so they are nice and clean and white like they should be.”…
