Officials urge driving caution ahead of Hurricane Isaias

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Severe weather is forecast over the Chattahoochee Valley over the next 24 to 48 hours as Hurricane Isaias approaches, and drivers are being asked to use caution before heading onto the roads. The storm is expected to bring rain, gusty winds and possibly severe storms to the region.

The severe weather could lead to downed power lines, downed trees and problems with traffic lights, along with flooded roads.

Traffic light rules

Columbus Police Department Corporal Logan Waldie said there is a law for how drivers should treat malfunctioning traffic lights.

“If you have a flashing red light, you are to stop prior to entering the intersection, yield to any oncoming traffic, and after stopping you are to treat it like a stop sign. So stop and yield to any oncoming traffic and then you can proceed. If you have a yellow light, slow and yield to any incoming traffic as well, also proceeding through that intersection. If all lights are out and there is no red yellow or green flashing or steady lights, obviously come to a stop, yield to any oncoming traffic, and then proceed to the intersection with caution,” Waldie said.
