HARRIS COUNTY, Ga. ( WRBL ) – The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is set to begin construction work to install a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) on State Route 1 and Cotton Street.
The beacon is used as a warning along crosswalks to “improve safety for pedestrians crossing the road.” The GDOT says the beacons can also be installed along with a pedestrian warning sign.
The RRFB is made of two rectangular-shaped yellow indications. Each indication contains a LED light source. The GDOT said that RRFBs flash and alternate based on when pedestrians are crossing to alert drivers.
The GDOT reports that the RRFBs could reduce pedestrian vs. vehicle crashed by 47% and it can increase motorist yield rates up to 98%.
The GDOT says motorists should expect delays, use caution and reduce speed when traveling through the area. GDOT estimates construction work should be completed by March.
