Champ Baker III, MD, the President of the Alumni Association, has shared his journey from being an orthopaedic surgeon to leading the association. He studied at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency there. After a sports medicine fellowship, he joined his father’s practice at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia.
His wife, Karin, also an MCG graduate, practices physical medicine and rehabilitation in their community. The couple has consistently supported their alma mater through donations of time and money. Baker is proud to serve as the alumni association president, a role he sees as a way to support the institution that shaped their careers.
Baker points out the positive changes at MCG, such as increased enrollment, campus expansion, and curriculum improvements. He urges alumni to participate in various ways, like joining the alumni association, volunteering as a mentor, attending alumni events, or donating.
He highlights the importance of donations, like student scholarships and the stethoscope program, which gives each new medical student a stethoscope. Baker believes these gestures have a significant impact and serve as a reminder of the support from past generations.
