Opelika Parks and Recreation received three awards at the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) conference on February 6. The organization’s Director, Sam Bailey, was given the Jim Spain Professional of the Year Award, a prestigious recognition among ARPA members. Bailey, an ARPA member for 40 years, appreciated the honor.

The Opelika Recycled Teenager Halftime Show was awarded the Innovative Program of the Year for Populations 15,001 & Above. The program, managed by SportsPlex Adult Activity Director Valeri White, allows seniors aged 53-81 to perform at Auburn University Women’s Basketball games. White was pleased with the seniors’ participation and their eagerness to learn.

Mandy Moore received the Community Service Award for her volunteer work with the Opelika Recycled Teenager Halftime Show. Moore has volunteered over 200 hours in the past three years, coaching seniors and creating choreography. She values her volunteer work and the role of dance in seniors’ lives.

The ARPA, affiliated with the National Recreation and Parks Association, represents professionals in park, recreation, and therapeutic recreation services. The organization promotes the profession through leadership, education, advocacy, and service.
