INSPIRED: Good samaritan rescues woman trapped in Opelika flash flood

Opelika, Ala. (WRBL) – Local chef Nick Howard emerged as a hero during Monday morning’s flash flooding in east Alabama as he rescued a distressed woman trapped in her car behind Opelika’s Piggly Wiggly on First Avenue.

The woman was attempting to navigate the roadway when she got stuck, and the water started rising. Howard walked down to take a picture of the roadway when he saw the woman trapped in her car. Wading into the water, Howard escorted the woman to safety. He reassured the trapped woman, “I’m just glad I walked down there. I didn’t even know you were in there. My Lord.”

Visibly upset and shaking, she thanked him several times with a hug. Chef Howard, ever the calming presence, lightened the mood with humor, “Ma’am, are you OK? It’s OK, you’re gonna be OK. I helped her out, officer. Do I get a medal? I’ll give you a handshake. I done saved a life.”

Hopefully, Chef Howard will get a medal for his bravery or a new pair of shoes; he ruined the Air Forces he had on. In the meantime, we were able to grant one request.
