Amy Helmick appointed as district’s next Magistrate Judge

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A Columbus resident and Georgia graduate has been appointed as the new Magistrate Judge of our district.

Amy Helmick will succeed the retiring Magistrate Judge Stephen Hyles, who is currently serving as the Columbus Branch Chief for the Middle District United States Attorney’s Office.

Helmick’s eight-year term starts on July 1 of this year.

According to Middle District Judge Clay Land, “Amy Helmick is uniquely qualified to be our district’s next Magistrate Judge. She has a keen intellect, broad relevant experience, and the proper judicial temperament.”

Helmick currently resides in Columbus with her husband David Helmick and their two children. She graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law.

Middle District judges unanimously chose Helmick. Part of the process included a screening committee consisting of Middle District attorneys Larae Moore, Barbara Agricola, Brandon Peak, Michelle Schieber, and Robert Wadkins, Jr., along with community representatives Kornisha Brown and Rev.
