The Columbus-Phenix City Metropolitan Planning Organization is updating their Metropolitan Transportation Plan

COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — The Columbus-Phenix City Metropolitan Planning Organization is updating their Metropolitan Transportation Plan for infrastructure and policy needs through 2050 in the Chattahoochee Valley.

In this plan, organizers looked at the current and projected congestion on roadways like areas on or near I-185, bridges crossing over the Chattahoochee River, and U.S. 280.

Organizers believe congestion will increase most in Alabama roadways including U.S. 80, Riverchase Drive, Summerville Road, and Opelika Road.

Will Johnson, the Director of Planning says their goal is to create complete streets, similar to the work being done in Midtown. He says these streets are used to include everyone from regular transportation to active.

Organizers say connectivity is needed for schools and parks in the Chattahoochee Valley as an effort to decrease pedestrian and bicyclists’ accidents with automobiles.

Johnson says congestion is influenced by many factors. One being a society focused on cars where ordering and delivering goods has become popular.
