COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — In late October a delegation from Calvary Christian School in Columbus headed to Valdosta, Georgia to provide hands-on assistance to Hurricane Helene victims. Helene slammed through the area on September 27th killing three people in Valdosta, smashing homes and businesses, and uprooting thousands of trees and lives.
Calvary Christian wanted to do something to help. Sean Burns is a Calvary Bible teacher who says, “We try to get (our) kids in the community, try to get them to understand the importance of servant leadership, being that role model, trying to be the hands and feet of Jesus.”
Thirty-two Calvary juniors and seniors made the 175-mile journey to Valdosta on October 28th and 29th, teaming up with Samaritan’s Purse to provide relief to homeowners. Burns says, “Once we got down there and saw the devastation and they saw Samaritan’s Purse and what they were doing, it took on a whole different meaning.”
Natalee Peyton is a junior at Calvary. She recalls, “The first house just had trees everywhere, fallen all over the place. We moved numerous trees that had fallen. We had a wall of debris that we had raked up and shoveled.”
