Columbus Police debunk fake social media post claiming there is a serial killer in the city

COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — This morning Columbus Police took to social media to debunk a rumor that has been circulating for nearly three weeks.

A Facebook post falsely claiming that there was a serial killer on the loose in Columbus has been making the social media rounds.

Police say this is the perfect example of why you should not believe everything you see or read on social media.

Police post the fake Facebook post to the Columbus PD site Friday morning after getting national media inquiries, including one from USA Today.

“Well, the fact that it’s been it’s been out there for a couple of weeks and we had already posted it  as a scam on our financial crimes page,” Deputy Police Chief Lance Deaton said. “But we started getting  questions and  requests from national news outlets  trying to fact check  this story and,  you know, realizing that this thing had gotten continues to get shared and reshared and it’s made its way outside of our city  and all across our city, we thought it was important to put it out to the public that this is a scam. “
