VALLEY, Ala. (WRBL) – For six years, 35-year-old JerQuirius Gates has faced an unrelenting battle against kidney failure, enduring hours-long dialysis sessions three times a week to stay alive. Despite the physical toll, Gates’ radiant smile, infectious positivity, and unwavering faith have inspired his community to rally around him as he awaits the one gift that could transform his life: a kidney transplant.
At just 28 years old, Gates’ life changed forever. “I got really lightheaded and couldn’t catch my breath,” he recalled. His blood pressure had reached stroke levels, and he was soon diagnosed with renal failure caused by undiagnosed hypertension.
Since then, Gates has relied on dialysis to survive. “I’m thankful for this machine and the incredible nurses who keep me going,” he said. “But I’m ready to live again.”
Gates is working to raise $5,000 to cover the costs associated with a transplant—medical bills, travel, lodging, and other expenses. With support from family, friends, churches, and his community, he’s already raised 73% of his goal.
