Columbus juvenile courtroom judge releases 13-year-old shooting suspect to parents

COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — New details are emerging in a shooting from Sunday where a Columbus teenager is accused of shooting his 9-year-old brother to death.

The 13-year-old alleged shooter was in Juvenile Court this afternoon. WRBL had the only reporter at the courthouse, though the preliminary hearing was closed to the public because of the age of the accused.

The parents of the deceased and accused were in Judge Warner Kennon’s Government Center courtroom.

Their attorney – William Kendrick – tells WRBL the judge will allow the 13-year-old to be released into the custody of his parents.

Kendrick says the shooting was a tragic accident that did not happen at the home where the boys lived. Kendrick also says the parents were not present at the time of the shooting Sunday evening at a residence off Floyd Road in East Columbus.

“I mean, everything considered, you got an older brother, younger brother, the holiday time frame. You know, no issues of angst or animosity between them,” said Kendrick. “I mean, you’ve got an older brother who’s going to be out to grieve with his family and bury his younger brother, who as an result of an accident, is no longer with us.”
