Freezing cold temperatures will bring a slight chance for snow and ice buildup in Columbus in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service.
The rare occurrence of heavy snow accumulation isn’t highly likely in the Chattahoochee Valley this week, the NWS says — the chances of 1 inch of accumulation are about 8% for Columbus. But the region has a 30% chance to get one-tenth of an inch of ice, according to the NWS.
“There continues to be an increasing risk for accumulating ice (freezing rain) over parts of north & central Georgia on Friday,” the NWS said. “Now is the time to closely monitor the forecast and consider preparations.”
Columbus will see lows near or below freezing each night for the rest of the week, according to the NWS. Rain is in the forecast for Friday night and Saturday, while there are chances for snow Thursday night and Friday.
The majority of Georgia faces some level of risk for dangerous winter weather, according to the NWS. The chances of snow accumulations greater than 1 inch are highest in north Georgia. Cities such as Dalton, Clayton and Calhoun have chances greater than 80% to see that much snow.
