COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – For the third year, Horace Empowerment hosted the annual Track & Field Honors Luncheon for student athletes across Muscogee County. High school track stars from all seven schools were represented at the New Birth Outreach Future Life Center in Columbus.
Last year, Horace Empowerment, a non-profit organization, awarded one athlete with a scholarship, and this year they received enough donations to have two scholarships. The Richard Lane Campbell Scholarship honors the late Richard Campbell, who was a record-holding athlete at Hardaway High School and retired as a detective with the Columbus Police Department. Campbell’s wife, Angela, said she’s grateful to the founders, Markeith and Rosalene Horace for this special naming.
“They (Markeith and Rosalene) asked me if it would be okay for them to do a scholarship in the name of my husband, and I just felt very humbled by that because they could’ve chosen anyone but they chose him,” she said. “I would like for them (the scholarship recipients) to love it with a drive and a spirit; and to carry it on to others so they know that there is more to sports than just being an athlete.”…
