Amid a heat wave in the Chattahoochee Valley, Columbus recreation centers will serve as cooling stations this week, the Columbus Consolidated Government announced Monday.
The mayor’s office said the decision was made after the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory that remains in effect until 8 p.m. July 29. The NWS forecast predicts the local heat index to range from 105 to 109 degrees during that period.
“Due to the possible dangerous heat in Columbus this week, the Columbus-Muscogee County Emergency Management and Homeland Security department is partnering with Columbus Parks and Recreation and METRA to utilize the city’s recreation facilities as cooling stations for people to seek a cool place from the heat,” the news release says…
