Auburn wide receiver Malcolm Simmons’ defense requested youthful offender status Friday morning during a hearing at the Lee County Justice Center, after the sophomore was arrested for domestic assault July 16.
Friday morning’s preliminary hearing quickly recessed after a meeting with both attorneys, after which Lee County circuit judge Samantha Copelan shared Simmons’ defense filed a motion for youthful offender status. While that request is being reviewed, the case becomes confidential, and anyone not involved with the legal proceedings was removed from the courtroom.
Youthful offender status is available in the state of Alabama to anyone 20 or younger. If granted, Simmons will not enter into a jury trial, and every record involved with the case will be closed off to the public…
