Columbus State freshmen getting real world experience out of the classroom

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – Columbus State University announced earlier this year they’re revamping their curriculum to help get their students more prepared for the workforce.This includes getting them out of a traditional classroom. Columbus State’s new initiative is called the “River Program”.  This morning a group of freshmen spent time by the Chattahoochee River to discuss environmental science and biology.

The students heard from a technical program specialist. Chattahoochee River Keeper Ashley Desensi. She talked about how she uses science every day to help implement cleaning methods for the Chattahoochee River. Desensi is a CSU graduate herself, and wishes she had this kind experience when she was on campus.

“And if I could have had experiences like this I think it would have made a huge, huge difference. I think it’s a game changer especially when we’re talking about true freshmen coming right out of high school. They’ve been in a classroom setting there, and they’re going into a classroom setting on the college campus. Having something new and different is really exciting,” said Desensi…
