“Safe Kids Columbus” kicks off National Child Passenger Safety Week

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, every 32 seconds a child under the age of 13 is involved in a car crash. Many times, injuries and deaths can be prevented by proper use of car seats, booster seats and seat belts.

“Safe Kids Columbus” kicked off the week with a presentation about children’s car seats. Pam Fair, the executive director for “Safe Kids Columbus”, wants to emphasize to families that most children under the age of 10 aren’t ready to use a regular seat belt. “Safe Kids Columbus” says children seated in booster seats, in the backseat of a vehicle, are 45% less likely to be injured in a crash, compared to kids just wearing seat belts.

“So not rushing that rear facing infant until two. Not rushing to have your child in a harness. We know race car drivers in their race car; they connect themselves up in a 5-point harness just like your child’s car seat. So, it’s a great way if you must crash to crash,” said Fair. “Then also using that booster seat until your child properly fits that seatbelt. For many kids that ages anywhere from 10 to 12 years old.”…
