The Soul of the Hike, “Coming Home” event has grown from one day to a three day event in the past five years. Founded by Fillise Preer, the great-granddaughter of Henry Preer Sr. and granddaughter of Johnnie Preer, the event was held at “The Hike,” which is at the area of Abercrombie Rd. and George Williams Rd. In the past, the road was a rough and dusty gravel road, but this year, the city and the county concurred to have it beautifully paved just in time for the event.
On Oct. 31, an afternoon reception was held where attendees were invited to wear Western wear and join in for the “Hike Spectacular” for an evening filled with fun, delicious food, and special treats for all ages. For Saturday, the celebration began at noon with cooks putting out their best dishes and music playing. Everyone gathered for pictures and to watch as Preer accepted a proclamation from Commissioner Cedric Darty. Afterward kids played in the bounce house and everyone enjoyed home cooking.
