COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — As the nation honors its veterans, many former service members continue to silently struggle with the invisible wounds of war. Federal data shows that veterans are dying by suicide at a rate of 17 a day — a crisis one Columbus veteran is determined to fight head-on.
For Dominique Williamson, military service was always part of the plan. At just 19, he reported to Fort Knox, Kentucky, for basic training before becoming a Blackhawk crew chief and mechanic in the U.S. Army.
In the late 1990s, Williamson was deployed to the Caribbean as part of an operation to stop cocaine shipments from entering the United States from the Bahamas.
