Neighboring homeowner concerned as massive sinkhole goes unrepaired

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Eathan Betzler has been keeping an eye on the sinkhole just down the street from his home. It’s been more than two years since it formed and it’s continuing to widen with each passing rainfall.

Betzler pointed to a powerline pole just inches away from the edge of the sinkhole. He’s worried it could fall in.

“If this electrical current goes into the water and even sparks this tube right here, this yellow tube right here is a gas line,” Betzler explained.

He knows because he’s gone as far as calling a civil engineer to take a look at the situation while he attempts to sell his home. The aforementioned gas line lies unassumingly amid the brush and debris already inside the hole, which threatens to consume 269 Mimosa Road.

There’s no word on when – or if – the sinkhole will be repaired, even as multiple families have been driven out of their homes and others are struggling to leave the area. Requests for comment from local officials have been directed to lawyers, who have not yet responded…
