Buddhist monks walking for peace travel through east Alabama into west Georgia

OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) – A group of Buddhist monks walking cross‑country as part of the “Walk for Peace” movement will leave Opelika Friday morning as they continue their 120-day, 2,300-mile journey.

The monks have covered up to 28 miles a day since beginning their trek. Their presence has drawn visitors from across the region, many stopping along the route to offer support or simply witness the procession.

On Christmas evening, the group made a stop outside Foundry Church on North 26th Street in Opelika. Their Alabama route has also included visits to Selma, Montgomery and Tuskegee…
