State appeals judge’s orders for new trial for woman convicted of the death of baby due to meth use

LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WTVM) – The Lee County District Attorney’s Office has appealed a judge’s decision for a new trial for a woman sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2020 following the death of her newborn.

Cherith Shoemaker was convicted of chemical endangerment of a child, causing death in 2020. According to officials, she admitted to law enforcement that she had smoked methamphetamine shortly before going into labor.

Lee County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Tickal vacated the 2020 conviction and ordered for a new trial. AP reports that Tickal said Shoemaker’s attorneys presented credible new evidence that the infection caused the stillbirth…
