Drivers in Russell County could pay up to $3,000 for littering due to newly increased enforcement

RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) — Starting in 2026, Russell County law enforcement officers will increase enforcement of Alabama’s criminal littering laws.

Russell County now has three enforcement officers who, by Alabama law, can write non-traffic citations for criminal littering.

In Alabama, criminal littering is a Class B Misdemeanor, with maximum fines for a first-time violator is $500. A second offense will include a fine of up to $1000 and up to 100 hours of community service, or a fine ranging from $2,000-$3,000.

An additional $500 will be added to the fine if the violator is proven to have littered cigarettes, cigars, food containers or a bottle of urine…
