Ralston Towers residents report return of problems that closed building in 2020

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Residents of Ralston Towers say problems that forced the century-old building to close in 2020 have returned, including pest infestations, unreliable heating and cooling, overflowing trash and recurring water and elevator issues along with security issues.

Ralston Towers, opened in 1914 as a downtown luxury hotel and later converted to affordable housing, was shut for unsafe conditions in 2020 and subsequently renovated. But tenants say many of the same conditions are resurfacing. Fire and EMS visit the Ralston weekly to rescue people from elevators.

“We matter and it feels like to me you’re more about the money and not us the residents,” said Christina Scott, who first spoke to News Leader 9 in August 2025 when several units lacked air conditioning.
