A father’s Valentine’s tradition lives on nearly 20 years after his death

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — For many people, Valentine’s Day brings flowers, cards, or candy. For Marquette McKnight and her four sisters, it brings something more meaningful, a familiar gold box of chocolates that carries decades of love behind it.

What started as a simple gesture from their father has become a lasting mystery and a powerful reminder of love and family memories. McKnight says the tradition began when she was a teenager. Their father would bring home boxes of Whitman’s Samplers for his wife and five daughters every Valentine’s Day.

“My parents had five girls, and I guess it probably started early in high school.” McKnight said. “He brought us home a box of Whitman samplers and, it continued, as we all graduated and went off, started our careers or college.”…
