Chattahoochee Valley community celebrates National SRO Appreciation Day

CHATTAHOOCHEE VALLEY (WRBL) — The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) recognizes Feb. 15 as National School Resource Officer (SRO) Appreciation Day. Several police departments and schools across the Chattahoochee Valley are showing their appreciation for their officers.

NASRO encourages schools and communities to take time on Feb. 15 of every year to let their SROs know how much they appreciate the work these officers do to bridge gaps between law enforcement and youth and to keep schools safe.

In a social media post made by the Opelika Police Department, officials expressed gratitude for the SROs serving the Opelika community. The post states, “From high-fives in the morning to ensuring a safe environment for learning, our SROs are an essential part of the Opelika family. We are incredibly proud of this team and the relationships they build with our Opelika City Schools youth every single day. Happy National SRO Appreciation Day!”

Manchester High School and other schools in the Meriwether County School system made a joint social media post showing appreciation for their SROs as well. The post states, “Thank you for keeping our schools safe, supporting our students, and being a positive, steady presence on our campuses. Your dedication and commitment help make our schools stronger every day!”

Officials with Phenix City Schools made a social media post also expressing their gratitude for the SROs serving their community. The post states, “We are grateful for Sergeant Duke, Officer Jakes, Officer Campbell, and Officer Smith for their leadership, service, and daily commitment to keeping our students, staff, and schools safe. Their presence goes beyond security.”

NASRO established the national observance in 2022, after receiving frequent inquiries from schools around the country regarding the most appropriate day to recognize their SROs…
