Silencing the Distractions: Shaw High School’s Yondr system

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Next school year, Georgia’s Distraction Free Act might prohibit students from kindergarten to eighth grade from using their devices in school. One local high school has already adopted a similar approach.

“Our teachers just love the fact that they didn’t have to compete,” said Shaw High School Principal Sureya Hendrick. “They felt like they were competing against the cell phone.”

That “competition” led to change at Shaw High School, as for the past year and a half, the school has implemented the Yondr system. Yondr is a system that restricts students from using their devices by placing them in a pouch during school hours, with the goal of keeping students more engaged during instruction…
